There is a new club this year for people who like to sing: the choir club! Mr. Kelm wanted to start the club because a number of kids were interested in singing, but many students couldn’t actually sign up for his choir class either because of AP class requirements or dual enrollment.
Mr. Kelm added, “To anyone who has never been in a choir before, just come try it out because everyone is welcome.”
As the year goes by, he’s hoping to incorporate all of the major elements of choral singing from the class into the club. He wants to include vocal jazz arrangements covering pop music, some classical choral music, and more holiday-appropriate music. He wants to provide students with full experiences they might not otherwise know about if they did not participate in a music class.
He has also been very pleased the results so far. “Each of the kids and every student comes in here with a mindset of creating real musical art forms. Right now, we have about 25-26 singers enrolled in the choir club, and a really big, solid choir involves 35 or 40 people.”
Mr. Kelm eventually hopes for a larger choir for Edsel Ford. “With everything going on, it lets us travel more, participate in festivals, and I love it here at Edsel. For a long time, Edsel Ford had a really good, strong history of music, and I think it’s time we start building that and bringing it back, and I need people to do that.”
Choir Club meets every Thursday from 3:00-3:50 in Mr. Kelm’s Room (F-16).
